This basin is home to the Lake Ladoga seal (Phoca hispida lagogensis) a subspecies adapted to freshwater and only found in this Lake. The estimated population as of 1992 was between 10,500 and 12,500 individuals. The species is considered vulnerable to extinction by IUCN. It is a legally protected species that cannot be hunted, however, around 200-300 individuals are caught each year as bycatch in local fisheries.
